Evaluation of foam properties of saponin from Ilex paraguariensis A. St. Hil. (Aquifoliaceae) fruits BJPS
Canto,Gizele Scotti do; Treter,Janine; Yang,Samanta; Borré,Gustavo Luís; Peixoto,Maria Paula Garofo; Ortega,George González.
Saponins are natural compounds able to form abundant foam, a desirable quality required in some chemical, foods, cosmetic and pharmaceutical processes. Ilex paraguariensis A. St. Hil. (Aquifoliaceae) known as mate, is a South American widely cultivated specie due to the preparation of a tea-like beverage from its leaves. Moreover, its green fruits are a rich source of non-toxic and very low haemolytic saponins. In this study, mate saponin fraction (MSF) was evaluated as a foam former, focusing on its foamability, foam lifetime, and film drainage in the presence of different electrolytes (ionic strength I = 0.024 M). Sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and polysorbate 80 (Poly-80) were used as reference surfactants. The critical micelle concentration (CMC), the...

Evolution divergente de cultures phytoplanctoniques marines en relation avec la qualité des enrichissements ArchiMer
Divanach, P.; Sube, J..
Four marine phytoplanctonic cultures from natural inoculum of Nannodito sp. have been submitted to different fertilizers in identical light and temperature conditions. The composition of enrichments has been studied to introduce Nitrogen as comparative factor. One tank without nutrients and three enriched cultures, the first only with sodium nitrate, the second with "Conway medium" and the last in which nutrients were provided by convenient dilution of "foam", have been followed for physical, chemical, biological parameters during three months. Temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, optical density, particulate matters, Organic Carbon, Nitrogen, Phos phorus, Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium, metal traces and biological parameters were analysed...

Separation efficiency of a vacuum gas lift for microalgae harvesting ArchiMer
Barrut, Bertrand; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Muller-feuga, Arnaud; Rene, Francois; Narvaez, Cesar; Champagne, Jean-yves; Grasmick, Alain.
Low-energy and low-cost separation of microalgae from water is important to the economics of microalgae harvesting and processing. Flotation under vacuum using a vacuum gas lift for microalgae harvesting was investigated for different airflow rates, bubble sizes, salinities and harvest volumes. Harvesting efficiency (HE) and concentration factor (CF) of the vacuum gas lift increased by around 50% when the airflow rate was reduced from 20 to 10 L min(-1). Reduced bubble size multiplied HE and CF 10 times when specific microbubble diffusers were used or when the salinity of the water was increased from 0 parts per thousand to 40 parts per thousand. The reduction in harvest volume from 100 to 1 L increased the CF from 10 to 130. An optimized vacuum gas lift...

Shoreline Extraction from WorldView2 Satellite Data in the Presence of Foam Pixels Using Multispectral Classification Method ArchiMer
Minghelli, Audrey; Spagnoli, Jérôme; Lei, Manchun; Chami, Malik; Charmasson, Sabine.
Foam is often present in satellite images of coastal areas and can lead to serious errors in the detection of shorelines especially when processing high spatial resolution images (<20 m). This study focuses on shoreline extraction and shoreline evolution using high spatial resolution satellite images in the presence of foam. A multispectral supervised classification technique is selected, namely the Support Vector Machine (SVM) and applied with three classes which are land, foam and water. The merging of water and foam classes followed by a segmentation procedure enables the separation of land and ocean pixels. The performance of the method is evaluated using a validation dataset acquired on two study areas (south and north of the bay of Sendaï—Japan)....

The emissivity of foam-covered water surface at L-band: Theoretical modeling and experimental results from the frog 2003 field experiment ArchiMer
Camps, A; Vall-ilossera, M; Villarino, R; Reul, Nicolas; Chapron, Bertrand; Corbella, I; Duffo, N; Torres, F; Miranda, Jj; Sabia, R; Monerris, A; Rodriguez, R.
Sea surface salinity can be measured by microwave radiometry at L-band (1400-1427 MHz). This frequency is a compromise between sensitivity to the salinity, small atmospheric perturbation, and reasonable pixel resolution. The description of the ocean emission depends on two main factors: 1) the sea water permittivity, which is a function of salinity, temperature, and frequency, and 2) the sea surface state, which depends on the wind-induced wave spectrum, swell, and rain-induced roughness spectrum, and by the foam coverage and its emissivity. This study presents a simplified two-layer emission model for foam-covered water and the results of a controlled experiment to measure the foam emissivity as a function of salinity, foam thickness, incidence angle, and...
